USDA Letter About USDA Foods for Schools

The attached letter is from Kevin Concannon, USDA Under Secretary of Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services. In his letter, the Under Secretary stresses the "availability and importance of the foods that USDA purchases on behalf of schools." He goes on to say that "USDA Foods are important and cost-effective resources that can help schools meet the overall goals of providing healthier meals to children." A core point of the Under Secretary's message is that the cash reimbursements of the National School Lunch Program and the availability of USDA Foods are a dual support system providing a balanced and flexible menu of of resources that can meet the school district's needs for producing healthful school meals.
