Purple Bus Delivers Summer Meals in San Marcos

The San Marcos CISD Child Nutrition Department is putting new meaning into an old saying that’s been around since the 1500’s: If a child can’t come to a meal, the meal will come to the child. When faced with the challenge of feeding hungry children during the summer break, Associate Director Mike Boone thinks outside the box and –subsequently-- inside a bus.

Anticipating summer 2012, Boone bought an older school bus at a discounted rate. He had it painted the Rattler colors of purple and white, and –as the project grew—added Rattler fangs and graphics to truly make it SMCISD identifiable. He removed some of the back rows, so that coolers, hot meal insulators, and other equipment could be added. Beneath the bus a generator purred quietly, keeping the bus a few degrees cooler. Then he took it on the road, beginning in June.
