Power Up With School Breakfast
This year, the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) and the School Nutrition Association (SNA) will inspire students to embrace the power of breakfast by teaming up with some very special superheroes. The "Power Up! With School Breakfast" campaign will kick off with National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) and continue throughout the spring. In late February through early March, districts will receive boardwalk-style cardboard cutouts of Mr. Breakfast and Yogurl so the students can insert their faces and envision themselves transformed through breakfast.
Visit http://www.schoolbreakfast.org/hallofheroes/ to learn more about all the School Breakfast Superheroes. Join Mr. Breakfast and Yogurl, along with Crunch, Fruit Avenger, the Sandwich Sensi and Eggbot on their mission to defeat their nemesis, the Breakfast Skipper!
TDA's menu calendar templates for March 2009 through May 2009 have recently been revised to feature the School Breakfast Superheroes. Click here to access the templates.
National School Breakfast Week is March 2-6, 2009. For more information, tips, and tools to promote the event, please visit www.schoolnutrition.org/nsbw.
To reinforce the message being delivered at school, Commissioner Todd Staples will appear in a public service announcement with all of the Hall of School Breakfast Heroes starting in late February and running through May. Excitement will grow as the Heroes travel from school to school. Click here to view the public service announcement.
Also, the "Expanding Your Breakfast Program" School Breakfast resource is now available! In conjunction with the Office of Strategic Initiatives, Partnerships, and Outreach (OSIPO), the Child Nutrition Division has redesigned the School Breakfast Toolkit as an on-line resource to help school districts serve more students in School Breakfast programs. "Expanding Your Breakfast Program" provides a step-by-step guide to create a breakfast-focused team, explore alternative service methods, design and implement an action plan, and market the program effectively to improve participation and impact student health and academic potential. The resource includes downloadable letters to principals, teachers, and parents, a PowerPoint presentation, and other materials to build community support and encourage more students to eat School Breakfast.
Visit the new resource at the CND website: www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/breakfast/expansion/default.htm.
Another way to maximize the power of school breakfast is with the Breakfast Participation Sweepstakes. Schools can tell SNA how "Power Up with School Breakfast" has boosted breakfast participation and what they plan on doing to celebrate NSBW. In return, you will be entered to win prize packs from the National Football League (NFL) and "Power Up" stickers for your students.
